Novi Sad
is an old city placed in Vojvodina on bank
of Danube. It is the second biggest city in
Serbia. Novi Sad is located about 80km to the
northwest of Belgrade, and 100 km from the
border town (with Hungary) of Subotica. By
car there is a direct highway between Budapest
and Novi Sad. From Belgrade you can to take
train or bus. A small
settlement is mentioned during Roman times
and the invasions of barbarian, Avarian and
Turkish conquerors while the first written
document, dating from 1694, writes about a
bridgehead to protect the Petrovaradin Fortress.
The history
of Novi Sad has been recorded continually since
the end of the 17th century, when the settlement
of the left bank of the Danube, most outside
the Petrovaradin Fortress, numbered a thousand
inhabitants. The name of the city as we know
it today dates back to February 1,1748, when
the citizens of the former Petrovaradinski
Shanac or Rátz Város, mostly
tradesmen and craftsmen, paid the Court in
Vienna, 95,000 forints for the status of a
free city.
One of the
symbols of Novi Sad, neo gothic cathedral built
during the period of 1893 - 1895. is situated
in the main center square of Novi Sad, Square
of Freedom. Cathedral has beautiful tall and
thin shafts. It is recognizable by its tall
clock tower, and vitrages made in Budapest.
It has been built on the place of previous
church from the mid 18 century and is devoted
to st. Mary.
The most
charming street in Novi Sad is Duvavska Street.
Very short, in the pure center, but very cute.
it's full of colorful facades, many advertising
and shops. It looks like the time has stopped
there. One look at this short street captures
your breath and heart .Straight from it you
get to Dunavski Park.
Orthodox
Bishop's Hall is situated in the beginning
of Zmaj Jovina Street.
The symbol
of Novi Sad is Petrovaradinska Fortress. It
is a place where you can take a walk, enjoy
in some restaurant or cafe. Petrovaradin is
a perfect spot for the views and at the same
time it is perfectly romantic, quiet place
with a breeze always.
The Austrians
built the Fortress and its suburban settlement,
as we know then today, during the 17th and 18th
centuries.
Exit 06 From July 6th to July 9th at Petrovaradin
Fortress
This year in July, in Novi Sad at Petrovaradin
Fortress, Exit 06 festival will be held. After
a huge success of Exit 05, which was visited
by 150,000 people, out of which 15,000 were
foreigners, there is no reason to change direction.
Exit 06 will last for four days, from 6th to
9th of July in 2006. Many world famous bands
played on the festival (Moloko, Iggy Pop, Public
Enemy etc.) and in the year 2004 it was listed
as the biggest cultural event of South-Central/Eastern
Europe.

The symbol
of the fortress is the old clock. A clock at
Petrovaradin fortress is interesting because
it works in the opposite way from the other
clocks - the big hand is showing the hours
and the smaller one is showing minutes. When
they built it they thought that hours are
more important than minutes.
